Testimonials & Statements

The public collection of success stories, testimonials, and organization statements is a powerful response to those who want to restrict access to e-cigarettes and other smoke-free products. Our goal is to present an assortment of compelling individual reports that will make it impossible for anyone to claim that substitution of low-risk alternatives is not a proven method for quitting smoking.

This page includes a few examples of these consumer testimonials, as well as links to larger collections in various countries, and statements from consumer organizations around the world.

SARAH OWENS, UNITED STATES

Stopped smoking cigarettes after 25 years! Wouldn't have been able to do that without the help of vaping. It really works. The patch and gum did not work. Wasn't a good candidate for Chantix because of the terrible side affects. Vaping works. Please don't make it harder for us to get the products that actually work! Thank you!

FLEMMING JOHANSEN, DENMARK

MARCO JOSEF RAABE, EUROPE

It is the basic human right of every adult smoker to have access to less harmful products and to use them to quit smoking. Estonian smokers are denied of that human right.

Tarmo Kruusimäe

Member of the Estonian Parliament

I am very glad to see that members of the parliament are beginning to understand that there are possibilities for harm reduction in tobacco policy and if we really want to, we can learn from the good practices of other countries. On the 4th of May, this year we took the first step in that direction when we voted for measures that help restrict the black market and reduces the harm to public health caused by smoking.

UTE BURBES, EUROPE

Hallo. Ich habe 35 Jahre geraucht. Zum Schluss sehr viel. Mindestens 2 Big Packg Zigaretten.

While we need to “think of the children,” we also need to think of the parents of those children. The literature is clear on the influence that parents who smoke have on their kids. A young person who lives with a parent who smokes (moms more than dads) is 80%-90% more likely to become a regular smoker as an adult. Parents who switch to a smoke-free nicotine product are sending a valuable message to their children that quitting smoking, never starting smoking, and taking steps to improve one's health are more important than any temporary satisfaction experienced when taking a drug. At the same time, there is a harm reduction and safer use message embedded in people’s decision to use less risky products. For many parents, switching to a low-risk, smoke-free alternative like vaping could mean living long enough to meet their grandchildren and to be a part of their lives.

I have been suffering from asthma, I have been smoking for the past 15 years, six months back I switched to vaping and never had asthma attack since then. vaping really helped me out in quitting smoke.

AVCA

New Zealand

Here in New Zealand, we have acknowledged the need to “think of the children” in the context of social harm as well as health harm. In our Maori communities, we have multi-generational financial and social harm from tobacco use - from TC policies such as “quit or die” and exorbitant tobacco taxes. The children of adults who are users of tobacco products have been and are negatively impacted by the cost of tobacco. Money is allocated to feed the dependence on cigarettes, instead of on food, clothing and medical care. As well, the chances of the children themselves becoming smokers is exponentially higher for a multitude of reasons. The pragmatic way to address this is to give the adults options for their nicotine, without the harms of combustion. This is what is currently in process here in New Zealand. It has been a battle between the facts and the hysteria imported from overseas. We are working towards risk proportionate regulation and it is hoped that we will, in the end, be able to serve the needs of the children by providing the adults with options that they have not had access to and empower them to make the switch to safer nicotine products.

CASA, Africa

On World Vape day it is important to reiterate the need to integrate harm reduction in the fight against smoking. Africa now has over 77 Million smokers, with 250,000 of them dying every year from smoking related diseases. As the rest of the world continues to reap the benefits of safer nicotine alternatives, most smokers in Africa do not have access to these life-saving products.
Safer nicotine products should be recommended by the F.C.T.C to smokers in Africa unable — or at least unwilling — to achieve cessation through complete nicotine and tobacco abstinence; who continue smoking despite the very real and obvious adverse health consequences.
Tobacco harm reduction approach recognizes that smokers unable or unwilling to abstain from smoking can still make positive choices to protect their own health in addition to the health of their families and communities. Safer nicotine products must be made affordable to smokers in Africa as an urgent human rights issue.

ALDRICH NOA, ASIA-PACIFIC

Vaping has saved me from tobacco. And at the moment I am transitioning to quitting vaping altogether. This technology has saved me. Please do not deprive other people the change for them to be saved from tobacco.

Clarisse Virgino

The Vapers Ph, Philippines

E-cigarettes have been conclusively proven to be around 95% safer than combustible cigarettes, and vaping has been helping millions of smokers quit all over the world. Vaping is a form of tobacco harm reduction (THR), a public health strategy that aims to provide safer alternatives to reduce harms caused by smoking and to provide nicotine to people who cannot or do not want to quit smoking by themselves or with currently-approved methods.

BRAM, INDONESIA

I'm Indonesian Vaper and I wanna tell something about vaping. Vaping is not Smoking and Vaping 99% not harmful and Smoking 99% harmful. Please be smart to differentiate between Vaping & Smoking. Terima kasih.

Samrat Chowdhery

AVI, India

Smoking disproportionately affects the disadvantaged. Vaping helps address these inequalities by giving those who can least afford medical treatment a means to prevent harm. In India where access to public healthcare is low, a 100 million people smoke, of whom a million die from smoking-related causes every year, harm reduction is vital. And yet, sale of vaping products was banned last year. On World Vape Day, about a million of us vapers in India will celebrate our win over smoking and also demand our and smokers’ rights to health and choice.

NNTHR, Nordic Region

Global Anti-smoking has had decades to morph into the current anti-all-non-pharma-nicotine iteration, long enough even to forget how a moral compass works. The way they are going is the right way to go because that's the way they are going, that’s not the way to go.

THRA, Canada

The abstinence only Tobacco Control approach, not only fails to help smokers, it also, fails society. It fails our youth. Many harm reduction alternatives, from condoms to safe needle injection sites, are recognized in Canada as having helped thousands of people, avoid the harms and death associated with risky behaviours. It is time the world, along with Canada, acknowledges safer nicotine alternatives as one further step to a smoke-free society. The Quit or Die mentality of misguided regulations, only harms Canadian citizens, and continues to lead the smoker down a path of premature death. The Tobacco Harm Reduction approach recognizes that smokers who are unable, or unwilling to quit smoking, need the ability to make safer nicotine choices to protect the health of themselves and their families, as well as their communities.
